[Answer]

The status of residence is the provisions in the Immigration Control Act for the activities allowed to foreigners residing in Japan and their status. There are 27 types of status of residence.

Activities of handling legal or accounting affairs that are to be managed by attorneys recognized as foreign law specialists under the Foreign Lawers' Law, public accountants recognized as accountants practicing foreign accounting under the Accountant Law or other persons with qualifications specified by law

Activities of handling medical affairs that are to be managed by physicians, dentists or other persons with qualifications specified by law

Activities that are carried out by staff members who have been transferred from foreign business places of public or private organizations having home offices, branch offices or other business places in Japan to business places of such organizations in Japan and that fall under the category of "Engineer" or "Specialist in Humanities/International Services" of this table

Activities of giving dramatic, vaudeville, musical, sporting or other performances for entertainment

Activities of following occupations that require skilled labor in special industrial fields on the basis of contracts with public or private organizations in Japan

Techinical Intern Training

(i) Activities which fall under any of the items (a) or (b)
(a)
Activities by a personnel who works for a
business office in a foreign country established by a public or private organization in Japan or by a personnel who works for a business office in a foreign country established by a foreign public or private organization which has a business relationship provided for by an Ordinance of the Ministry of Justice with a public or private organization in Japan, to acquire the skill, technology and knowledge (hereinafter referred to as "skills") by engaging in the operating activities of a public or private organization in Japan at a business office in Japan, based on employment contract with such public or private organization in Japan (including activities of those personnel for acquiring necessary knowledge to study, which is conducted by being accepted at business office of Japanese public or private organization in Japan).
(b) Activities to acquire knowledge being accepted by a non-profit organization, which conforms to the requirements provided for by an Ordinance of the Ministry of Justice and activities to acquire skills where such activities is conducted based on their planning and under their responsibility and supervision, based on employment contract with such organizations, by engaging in operating activities of such organization.
(ii) Activities which fall under any of the items (a) or (b).
(a) Activities by a personnel, who has acquired skills by engaging in activities provided for by the preceding item (a), in order to further acquaint such skills, based on employment contract with such pubic or private organization in Japan which is designated by the Minister of Justice, to engage in operating activities, which require such skills, at such organization.
(b) Activities by a personnel, who has acquired skills by engaging in activities provided for by the preceding item (b), in order to further acquaint such skills, based on employment contract with such pubic or private organization in Japan, which is designated by the Minister of Justice, engage in operating activities, which requires such skills (limited to activities of engaging in such business activities under the responsibility and control of non-profit organization which conforms to requirement provided for by an Ordinance of the Ministry of Justice).

Cultural Activities

Academic or artistic activities that do not involve remuneration or activities of conducting specialized research in culture or arts unique to Japan or studying such culture or arts under the tutelage of experts

Activities to be done during a temporary visit to Japan including sightseeing, recreation, sports, visiting relatives, inspection tour and taking part in seminars or meetings or other similar activities

Student

Activities to receive education at a college, a college of technology (kotosenmongakko), upper secondary school (including the latter course of a secondary educational school (chutokyoikugakko)) or high school course of specially supported school (tokubetsushiengakko), advanced vocational school (senshugakko) or schools in the miscellaneous category (kakushugakko) or equivalent educational institutions in terms of facility and organization in Japan

Trainee

Activities to learn and acquire skills at a public or a private organization in Japan (except for the activities listed in the right-hand column of "Technical Intern Training", item (i) in Table II and right-hand column of the "Student" column of this table).

Daily activities on the part of the spouse or unmarried minor who is supported by the foreign national staying in Japan with the status of residence referred to in the left-hand column of Appended Tables (1), (2) or (3) (except for "Diplomat", "Official","Technical Intern Training" and "Temporary Visitor") or staying with the status of residence of "Student" in this table.

Designated Activities

Activities designated by the Minister of Justice for individual foreigners

Those who are given permission for permanent residence by the Minister of Justice

Spouse or Child of Japanese National

Those who are spouses or adopted children as stipulated in Article 817-2 of the Civil Law or those who were born as children of Japanese nationals

Spouse or Child of Permanent Resident

Spouses of those who reside in Japan as permanent residents or special permanent residents as provided in the Special Law on Immigration Control for Expatriates with the Peace Treaty, or those who were born as children of such residents and have resided in Japan

Long Term Resident

Those who are permitted by the Minister of Justice to live in Japan for a designated period of stay in consideration of special reasons

College student” and “Pre-college student” statuses have been integrated into “Student” since July 1, 2010

A new status of residence referred to as “Technical Intern Training” has been introduced since July 1, 2010.
